The Albavet cardiorespiratory and internal medicine referral service operates from our Veterinary Hospital in Dunfermline. Offering a broad range of advanced cardiorespiratory and internal medicine diagnostics our experts are happy to see cases for single diagnostic procedures as part of your own work-up, or to see animals for full investigation of specific problems. We believe the Albavet Cardiology Referral Service is almost unique in Scotland in offering quick and easy 1-1 access to our cardiologist in person or by phone.


Our cardiorespiratory and internal medicine expert

Dr David Mackenzie - BSc(Hons) MA VetMB PhD CertVC CertAVP(SAM) MRCVS

David qualified from Cambridge in 2003 where he first developed his interest in cardiology. He then spent a year at Edinburgh Vet School followed by four years in the south of England where he established a busy cardiology and ultrasonography service. He subsequently worked in Dundee for a further four years practicing cardiorespiratory investigation and ultrasonography. David was awarded the RCVS certificate in cardiology in 2009, and the RCVS certificate in Small Animal Medicine in 2014. He is currently working for his certificate in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine.

Our cardiorespiratory and internal medicine services are run from our Veterinary Hospital in Dunfermline, Fife.

Cardiorespiratory services

  • Echocardiography
  • Electrocardiography
  • ECG interpretation
  • Video bronchoscopy
  • Airway cytology and culture
  • Inhaled foreign body removal
  • Blood gas analysis including full hematology, biochemistry and electrolytes
  • Thoracic radiography

Internal medicine services

  • Comprehensive investigation of all internal medicine cases
  • Abdominal ultrasonography
  • Ultrasound-guided biopsy or laparoscopy
  • Video-endoscopy of upper and lower GI tract and endoscopic biopsy

As part of our service we provide a range of support materials such as client handouts and information leaflets to help vets and their clients.

How to book a cardio & IM referral

We are happy to discuss referrals before you commit to us and to provide telephone advice at any time.

  • One off and emergency referrals
    If you’ve got an emergency or would simply like to make a one off referral you can call our Dunfermline hospital direct on 01592 641 333 and book a referral.
  • Set up an ongoing service
    If you’ve got time and would like to set up an arrangement for an ongoing service drop our referral director Graham Dodds an email and he’ll come back to you to set an arrangement up.


Referrals available

Tuesdays & Wednesdays. Outside these times please still call us as emergency consultations can be arranged by special appointment.
