The campaign will take place during November – or "Movember" as it is called by the thousands of men who grow moustaches during the month to raise funds for male prostate and testicular cancer. Albavet hopes its campaign will remind dog owners that men are not the only ones to suffer from prostate disorders.
As dogs age, their prostates enlarge, eventually causing symptoms including constipation, lameness and difficulties in urination. However, most of the time clinical signs are absent or vague. Owners are often unaware of the potentially serious health problems it can cause if left untreated. Albavet hope that, by running our Prostate Awareness Campaign at a time when the media spotlight is already on the dangers of prostate cancer in men, we can help spread the message that our clients should also be monitoring older dogs for signs of prostate disease.
- Affects 80% of entire male dogs over the age of 5 years
- Is painful for the dog but difficult for the owner to detect
- Is easy to screen for with a rectal examination
- Can easily be treated!!

CAT AND DOG OWNERS URGED TO HAVE THEIR PETS CHECKED FOR DIABETES....
November is national pet diabetes month. Albavet has joined the Pet Diabetes Month initiative to help raise awareness of diabetes in our pets and to highlight the current under diagnosis of this condition by encouraging owners of at risk pets to have them tested for diabetes.
Diabetes in animals is on the increase, partly as a result of the increase in obesity in our pet population. This disease can cause cats and dogs to become very sick if left untreated. It can eventually lead to coma and death. However, with the correct insulin therapy and diet diabetic animals can lead a long and healthy life. With early diagnosis and correct treatment you can restore the quality of your pet’s life.
As with many diseases early diagnosis is important. Signs that a pet may have diabetes include drinking too much water, urinating more, weight loss despite increased appetite and lethargy. These signs are not always obvious and can be easy to miss.
Cats and dogs over the age of 6 are at greater risk of the disease but age is not the only factor. To assess their pets risk more fully cat and dog owners are encouraged to visit www.petdiabetesmonth.co.uk and enter their pet in the first national online screening programme. The health screening will identify at risk animals and suggest that their owners visit Albavet veterinary Surgery to have their pet tested. The initial test at the surgery is quick and easy.
In addition, every pet owner completing the online screening will have the opportunity to be entered into a prize draw to win £250 of pet vouchers.
